SQA National 5 Music Concepts Practice Exam

The term that accurately describes a short musical idea repeated multiple times in a piece is "ostinato." An ostinato is a compositional technique where a specific melodic or rhythmic phrase is persistently repeated, often serving as a foundational element over which other musical elements can develop. This repetition helps establish a rhythm or motif that can create interest and drive within a piece of music.

In contrast, a motive refers to a smaller idea or fragment that may be varied or transformed throughout a piece, but it isn't specifically defined by repetition. A theme is generally a longer, complete melody that can be expanded upon in various ways, and while it may be repeated, it typically serves as the main subject material of the work rather than just a repeated idea. Lastly, a sequence involves the repetition of a musical idea at different pitches, thereby retaining its same melodic form but changing its position in terms of tonality. This means that while all these terms relate to repetition or variation in music, "ostinato" specifically highlights the continuous repetition of a short idea, making it the most fitting choice.
